Token-gated Discord, built from roles and channel permissions.
A token-gated Discord server shows certain channels only to members who hold a specific asset. NXT handles the asset side: it decides who qualifies and assigns roles. Discord handles the rest through the channel permissions you already know.
Gating is a rules problem
Most communities start with one holder channel and grow into several tiers: holders, larger holders, holders of a special trait, token holders, partners. Each tier is a rule, and the rules change as the project changes. The harder part is not creating the first gate, it is keeping a growing set of gates accurate.
Gates also need to fail safely. If a data source is slow for a minute, members should not lose access to a channel they qualify for.
How NXT gates a server
Each NXT rule links a condition to a Discord role. There are ten rule kinds: Contract, OpenSea collection, Token IDs, Trait, Quantity, ERC-20 balance, Staking, Native balance, Combo, and Custom API. Several rules can grant the same role, which gives you "or" logic, and a Combo rule requires up to five conditions at once, which gives you "and" logic.
You then set channel permissions so the role can see the gated channels. When you add or change a rule, NXT sweeps your server so verified members who already qualify receive the role without clicking Verify again.
Every outcome is pass, fail, or unknown. Unknown never removes a role, and a role is removed only when every rule for it definitively fails.
Set it up. Three steps.
Create the role
Make a role in Discord for the gated tier and place it below the NXT role in Server Settings > Roles.
Write the rule
In the dashboard, attach a rule to the role: a collection, a trait, a token balance, or a combination.
Set permissions
Allow the role to view the gated channels and deny @everyone. NXT keeps role membership current from then on.
Ten ways to gate
NFT ownership
Contract, OpenSea collection, Token IDs, and Quantity rules cover holding, counts, and specific pieces.
Traits
Grant roles for any or all of chosen traits on an ERC-721 collection, with an optional minimum.
Fungible tokens
ERC-20 rules use a minimum and optional maximum, so balance tiers do not overlap.
Native coin
Require a minimum ETH, POL, APE, or other native coin balance on a chain.
Staking
Count tokens held in your staking contract through a view function such as balanceOf.
Your own logic
A Custom API rule asks your HTTPS endpoint, with optional HMAC signing, whether a member qualifies.
