Reaction roles

Reaction roles let members pick up or drop roles by reacting to a message: notification pings, interests, regions, pronouns, or anything else. There is no limit on how many reaction role messages a server can have, on any plan.

1. Permissions

In the channel, make sure the NXT role has View Channel, Add Reactions and Read Message History. To post a new message, it also needs Send Messages and Embed Links. For the Unique mode it needs Manage Messages to remove a member's previous reaction.

In Server Settings > Roles, keep the NXT role above every role it hands out.

2. Create reaction roles

  1. Open Dashboard > Reaction roles and click New reaction roles.
  2. Give it a name. Only you see this.
  3. Choose where the reactions go:
    • Post a new message: pick a channel, then set the title, message and color. Tick List each emoji and its role to show the list in the message.
    • Use an existing message: paste a message link (right-click the message in Discord, then Copy Message Link). It can be any message in your server, such as one you built in Embed messages.
  4. Add a row for each role: pick an emoji (a common one, one of your server's custom emoji, or type or paste any emoji), then the role.
  5. Click Post message or Add reactions. NXT adds one reaction per role so members can tap it.

Discord allows up to 20 different reactions on one message. For more roles, create another reaction role message.

3. Modes

Mode What happens
Toggle React to get the role, remove the reaction to lose it.
Unique Members can hold one role from the message. Picking another swaps it and removes the old reaction.
Add only Reacting gives the role. Removing the reaction keeps it.
Remove only Reacting removes the role, for opt outs.

4. Roles that cannot be used

  • Roles above the NXT role (Discord does not let bots assign them)
  • Roles managed by an integration
  • Roles used by a token gated rule, because the next re-check would remove them again
  • Your captcha role, because handing it out by reaction would let members skip the captcha

5. Edit or delete

Open the setup to change the name, mode, message text, emoji or roles. NXT updates the message and its reactions, and the bot picks up changes within a minute. Deleting a setup removes the message NXT posted, or only NXT's reactions on an existing message. Members keep the roles they already have.

Every reaction role change appears in the member's role history in Dashboard > Members.
